Globe is located in Gila County, of which it is the county seat, east of Phoenix between Miami and San Carlos along US Highway 60 near Theodore Roosevelt Lake and the Tonto National Forest.
The community of Globe was established in 1876 as a mining community. It is said that Globe got its name from a large piece of silver, in the shape of a globe, found at a local mine. This area is still active in mining both copper and turquoise.
Globe is known for its old buildings that have been restored and adapted for modern uses. The area is also known for its annual "Apache Jii Day" Indian Fest in October. The festival celebrates the area's Native American culture. Area mining and ranching history is preserved in the Gila County Historical Museum, housed in the former Old Dominion Mine Rescue Station.
